Scaffolded Kouros

Kouros, Delos Museum, 2007

Delos was the religious center of the Cyclades, and it was sacked so many times it was abandoned. On vacation to the islands we took a short boat ride to this uninhabited archaeological site. It was cold, rainy and windy everything you don’t expect in the deep blue of the Mediterranean. Despite that we forged on, exploring and making images on the tiny island. What I found most interesting was the presence of all the everyday things like homes along alley ways with amazing mosaic floors, fountains and grinding stones. After too much rain we took shelter in the small museum where this sculpture is on display. I was taken with the sort of extreme supports holding up the reconstructed sculpture and waited out the many visitors to make an image of it alone.
